Key points

Port of the original Xbox 360 version. All additions from Alone in the Dark: Inferno for PlayStation 3 are missing.
Due to compatibility issues with modern graphics cards and operating systems, the game crashes when accessing the Display options menu, causing the game to run at the lowest graphical settings and resolution. See Issues fixed.
Using a controller is strongly recommended over keyboard and mouse controls.

Controller support
Go to Control Options and press any controller buttons when rebinding a key, until the game asks to confirm the use of a controller. When confirmed, all controls will be automatically rebound for a controller (Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers work this way). Once this is done, menus are also controller-friendly.

Remapping

Certain keys are unbindable when using the keyboard. The mouse buttons cannot be rebound, Delete cannot be bound to anything, and the default keys for vehicle/misc controls cannot be bound to on-foot controls unless they are unbound from vehicle/misc controls first. One consequence of this is that vehicle and on-foot controls must use separate buttons (i.e. if you walk with the arrow keys you cannot also drive with them) unless the default WASD keys are used.

Issues fixed

Menu is not being shown after changing resolution

After changing a resolution on some configurations, menu is no longer displayed (aside from animated background).
Change resolution manually[citation needed]
  1. Go to the save game folder.
  2. Open res.aitd with a text editor.
  3. Put this and save:
ResolutionWidth = 1920
ResolutionHeight = 1080
NewResolution = 0
PrevResolutionWidth = 1920
PrevResolutionHeight = 1080
This is an example for 1080p. Replace the values accordingly.

Game crashes when accessing settings on Windows 7 or updated Windows 10

On Windows 7 or later the game crashes when trying to access options due to access violation when trying to read available resolutions.
Use Unknownproject's patch[3]
Use d3d9 wrapper fix[4]
  1. Download this file and extract it.
  2. Copy d3d9.dll and d3d9.ini to <path-to-game>.
  3. Edit settings in d3d9.ini if needed.
Use GeDoSaTo
  1. Download and launch GeDoSaTo.
  2. Click on User Whitelist and add alone on a new line, then save.
  3. Click on Edit Settings, find renderResolution and set it to the desired screen resolution (ie. renderResolution 3840x2160@60).
  4. Find presentInterval and set it to 1.
  5. Find overrideWidth and overrideHeight and set them respectively to the desired screen resolution (ie. overrideWidth 1280 and overrideHeight 720).
  6. Find forceBorderlessFullscreen and set it to true.
  7. Run the game with GeDoSaTo Tool launched. If the game doesn't recognize keyboard and mouse input, switch to another process with Alt+Tab and switch back to the game.

Game won't start on Windows 10

Most modern desktop recording solutions (like Nvidia GeForce Experience) aren't compatible with the game.
Close any recording programs
Set Windows Vista, Windows 98 compatibility mode and disable fullscreen optimizations[citation needed]

Controller is not recognized

Delete or rename xinput1_1.dll in the installation folder

Other information

Unknownproject's patch

Improves 64-bit support and enables user to configure video settings via an external configuration file.
If the game is crashing to the desktop on the loading screen, set Alone_.exe (the modded executable, not the original Alone.exe) to Windows 98 compatibility mode

Notes

  1. 1.0 1.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/259170/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (259170) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
