Warnings

The macOS (OS X) version of this game does not work on macOS Catalina (version 10.15) or later due to the removal of support for 32-bit-only apps.

Key points

The game has to be installed on the same drive as Portal 2, otherwise the game may fail to start. See Missing background image.

Turn on "raw mouse input", in the mouse & keyboard game settings.

Localization Files

To have subtitles translated to a language you need to change Steam to that language. Go to Steam > Properties > Interface > Select Language. Let steam restart and now subtitles will load with the new language.

To have translated menus you need to do the following. Go to your Steam library and right click the game. Select properties. Then the Language tab. Select a language from the drop down menu.

  2. Under Local files select Verify Integrity of Game Cache.

Missing background image

The actual error message being Can't find background image materials/console/startup_loading.vtf

Auto-saved maps still being loaded

Crashing when publishing a map

Setting up[citation needed]
  1. Go to your Steam Community profile page then copy your profile link.
  2. Paste your link into the converter then copy the steamID64 value.
  3. Go to <path-to-game>\Aperture Tag\portal2\maps\puzzlemaker\
  4. Replace the folder's name with your 64-bit ID.

Notes

The level editor is only available for Windows.
These steps are only required once per installation.

No subtitles

Game may default to Steam's chosen language and only show localized closed captions but not subtitles even though language is selected correctly from game's Steam properties.[citation needed]

Games running on the Source engine can utilize Source Engine Console Commands for various tasks.

  3. Select the Keyboard tab
  4. Click the Advanced button
  5. Check the box next to Enable developer console (~)
  6. Click Apply

Notes

Press ~ to open the console.
Some commands may first require enabling "sv_cheats". You can do so by inputting sv_cheats 1 in the console.
Users without a US keyboard could experience some problems.
