Assassin's Creed is a singleplayer third-person action and stealth game in the Assassin's Creed series.

Key points

Only the PC version is subtitled Director's Cut Edition and includes new types of investigation missions, as well as reworked existing side missions. These changes were made to replace some of the original console missions that were criticized for being repetitive, but the total number of available missions is the same.[1]

Issues fixed

TweakGuides has created a comprehensive guide for fixing issues in this game.
You can find various fixes in this Ubisoft Support FAQ
Ubisoft Community Technical Support

Game freezes regularly for a few seconds

The game is trying to connect to Ubisoft servers which cannot be reached anymore.
Redirect IP 203.132.26.155[11]
  1. Edit the file %WINDIR%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts using Notepad/Notepad++. This file is protected so you must run your text editor under administrator account.
  2. Add the following line at the end: 203.132.26.155 127.0.0.1

Note:

This line will redirect all connections to Ubisoft's offline server to your own computer which will make the connections fail quickly, removing the freezing in the game. This server was used to track statistics about the game usage, so blocking the connections shouldn't cause any problem to the game.
Disable your internet connection[12]
You have to do this every time before playing the game.

Opening video plays with no visuals on Windows 7 and later

Set compatibility mode[citation needed]
  1. Open AssassinsCreed_Dx10.exe compatibility settings.
  2. Enable compatibility mode for Windows Vista (SP2).

Crashes to desktop at Ubisoft logo intro

The game will try to connect to Ubisoft servers which cannot be reached anymore.
Block the game's executable from accessing the internet with Windows Firewall[citation needed]
  1. Open the Start menu, type, and open "Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security".
  2. Click on "Outbound Rules" on the left-hand side.
  3. Click "New Rule..." on the right-hand side>
  4. Select "Program" then click next, select "This program path" then click "Browse...", then go to the install directory of the game and select either AssassinsCreed_Dx10.exe to use DirectX 10 or AssassinsCreed_Dx9.exe then click "open", then click next, then select "Block the connection", then click next, select Domain, Private, and Public, then click next, type a name, then click "finish".
Disconnect from from your network before starting the game[citation needed]
  1. If using a Wi-Fi/WLAN network adapter, simply disconnect from your network. If using Ethernet, either temporarily disable your Ethernet network adapter under "Network and Sharing Center" > "Change adapter settings" and right-clicking to "Disable", or simply unplug the Ethernet cable.
  2. Reconnect to your wireless network, or re-enable your Ethernet adapter/replug the cable.

Character audio problem

With 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound, characters' voices can be lost or inaudible.
Switch to Stereo[citation needed]

Game audio plays, but no visuals

Swap out files[citation needed]
  1. Go to the installation folder.
  2. Swap the names of the files AssassinsCreed_Game and AssassinsCreed_Dx[version].
  3. Run the game.

Regular stutter, especially in the Kingdom

Enable Low Latency Mode via Nvidia Control Panel or similar[citation needed]
Disable your internet connection[citation needed]
You have to do this every time before playing the game.

Game always starts up in windowed mode

By default, the game should run in fullscreen mode. However, occasionally, the game forces itself into windowed mode.
Return to fullscreen mode with Alt+ Enter[citation needed]
Use the -fullscreen command line argument[citation needed]

Crash when installed in a Storage Space

The game will refuse to run when installed on a drive which is managed by a Storage Space on Windows 8 and later.
Re-installing the Game on a drive that is not a Storage Space will fix this issue[citation needed]

Leap of Faith jumps result in death

In addition to visual glitches (such as twitching robes), playing with more than 60 FPS causes the Leap of Faith jumps to not work correctly, leading to the player characters death upon impact.
Enable Vsync in the graphics settings or force it in the graphics card control panel[13]
Cap game's framerate to 60FPS
  1. See the Frame rate glossary page for ways to limit FPS.

Mods

Assassin's Creed Overhaul

Updates most of the textures and particle effects in-game with a mix of Assassin's Creed Revelations textures and custom textures. If there are issues with running or installing the mod, making the game's executable large address aware might fix them.[14][15]

ReShade

Install by copying the contents of AC1 ReShade in the main folder of the game. (ReShade and OpenTexMod are both mutually exclusive. They don't run together by default. To run ReShade together with the Overhaul mod you have to either use TexMod, or to use OpenTexMod you need ENBInjector)[16][17][18] There also seems to be a texture issue with the sky while running this ReShade together with the Overhaul mod. In this Guide it is explained how you can make them both work together flawlessly.

Notes

  1. SafeDisc retail DRM does not work on Windows 10[2] or Windows 11 and is disabled by default on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 when the KB3086255 update is installed.[3]
  2. 2.0 2.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/15100/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (15100) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
