The Last of Us Part I is a remake of the PlayStation 3 game from 2013. The original game was developed by Naughty Dog and published by PlayStation PC. This is the first game in the Last of Us series to be released on PC and the second game developed by Naughty Dog to be released on PC, following Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection. The PC version features extensive improvements over the PlayStation 5 release, such as increased resolution, native ultra-wide-screen support, hardware-specific upscaling options (for Nvidia and AMD GPUs respectively), and more.[1]

The PlayStation 5 version was released on September 2, 2022, and the PC port was released on March 28, 2023. While the PC port was lauded for its extensive settings, the game launched to an overall negative reception due to several technical issues, such as extended shader compilation times, unexpected crashes, degraded performance and stability while compiling shaders in the background, mouse and camera stuttering, and the game being limited to utilizing relatively low CPU power.[3][4][5]

Several patches have been released post-launch aimed at addressing the issues: in addition to improving overall performance and fixing bugs, the patches have improved stability during the shader compilation process, fixed several crashes, reduced shader compilation time, shortened loading times, and improved the overall user-experience for the Steam Deck.[6][7][5][8]

Limit VRAM usage for weaker GPUs

Adjust VRAM through the developer debug menu[citation needed]
This solution needs to be applied every time the game is launched and lowering the allocated memory too much will result in textures not loading, use it only as a last resort.
  1. Unlock and open the developer debug menu.
  2. Go to Rendering > Stats... > Texture Streaming... in the developer debug menu.
  3. Lower the Texture Memory Size value at will.

Anti-aliasing (AA)

Modify the game's executable to disable TAA[16]
If using the Steam version, Steamless might have to be used first to unpack the executable.
This will also disable the sharpening filter that is bundled with the TAA.
  1. Open the game's executable, <path-to-game>\tlou-i.exe (AVX2) or <path-to-game>\tlou-i-l.exe (non-AVX2), in a HEX editor (e.g. HxD).
  2. Find 84 C0 74 08 41 8A C7 EB 05 HEX code.
  3. Replace it with 84 C0 90 90 32 C0 90 EB 05.
  4. Find 44 0F B6 F8 C5 C8 57 F6 84 C0 HEX code.
  5. Replace it with 45 33 FF 90 C5 C8 57 F6 84 C0.
  6. Save the changes.

Issues unresolved

Crashes, poor performance and "Please wait" screens during gameplay

People report a large amount of crashes every few minutes of gameplay and poor performance, especially when playing the game without letting the shader compilation process finish.[21]
The game possibly also suffers from a memory leak, possibly causing crashes and "Please wait" screens over time when the game runs out of system RAM.[22][23][24]
Wait at the game's main menu for shader compilation to finish[21]
The above issues might still happen, but seemingly to a lesser extent.
Nvidia RTX 30 series GPUs: update to Nvidia GPU driver version 531.58 or higher[25]

Very CPU-limited during gameplay

While the game utilizes CPU-multithreading excellently, the game seems to max out most cores on especially mid-range hardware while background-loading data during gameplay. This then causes the game to become very CPU-limited. This is likely caused by the game streaming in and decompressing data at the same time during gameplay in a less CPU-friendly way. After some time when standing still, when the background-loading is done, performance will return to normal.[5] Update 1.0.2.0 improved texture streaming behavior to reduce CPU usage, likely reducing the severity of this issue to some extent.[8]

Issues fixed

Font and button prompt issues

Button prompts and text flickering or displaying an incorrect or broken character.[26]
Right click on the game in Steam, select Properties>Controller, and select Disable Steam Input[27]

Proton: "Out of date driver" message and limited VRAM on AMD hardware

Add WINEDLLOVERRIDES="amd_ags_x64.dll=b" %command% as a command line arguments[28][29]
This may cause color artifacts on the curtains on the main menu, but rendering during gameplay behaves fine.
Doesn't seem to work for all users to fix the VRAM amount displayed at the graphics menu.[30]

  3. Press Ctrl+~ (English US keyboard layout) to access the debug menu.
  4. To change any value, hold the left mouse button and press a to decrease and d to increase.

Own the base The Last of Us Part 1 version and that already includes access to the Left Behind prequel chapter. It is thus not Deluxe Edition-exclusive. The wording on the store pages is just a big confusing as for example "The Last of Us single-player story" is of course also standardly included, but also listed in the same way as Left Behind for the Deluxe Edition.

The mod (older version for 1.0.1.5 update) indeed works and reveals the full debug menu, tested it with a 1.0.1.5 installation though. The version of the executable the mod provides is version 1.01 though, so could reveal various issues if using with this newer version as some other files besides the executable were changed in this newer version of the game.
